FAQ

Why is this sale happening?

CharterCARE  is undergoing a major shift, as it decouples from a large for-profit healthcare company to become an independent, nonprofit community hospital system. CharterCARE is no longer owned by an out of state, private equity-backed corporation. Instead, it is returning to its original mission—serving the community as a nonprofit, locally governed and managed healthcare provider.

Who Bought CharterCARE?

This is not a traditional purchase. Unlike previous transactions where hospitals were acquired by larger systems, this is a divestiture. CharterCARE’s current for-profit owner is stepping away, and with the help of a private, charitable organization, it has regained independence as a stand-alone, nonprofit hospital system.

What does it mean to be a nonprofit hospital?

A nonprofit hospital reinvests its surplus revenue into patient care, staff, facilities, and community health initiatives rather than distributing profits to owners or investors. This allows CharterCARE to focus solely on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care while maintaining financial sustainability.

Who will be in charge?

The CharterCARE system  will be managed by the current CEO, Jeffrey Liebman, and his executive leadership team, supported by industry strategists as needed. CharterCARE is  governed by a local board of directors composed of community leaders, healthcare professionals, and business professionals. This means decision-making will be driven by what’s best for patients, employees, and the community—rather than by corporate or investor interests.

What happens when the sale is officially finalized?

We are no longer owned by an out of state, private equity-backed corporation. Instead, we are returning to our original mission—serving our community as an independent, nonprofit, locally governed and managed healthcare provider.

What happens next?

Our sale is now complete, and the intense regulatory review of that process has ended. We will continue to conduct normal operations in order to provide the high quality, compassionate care that we are known for.

Do we have any remaining relationship with Prospect?

Very few but as we transition back to our own systems, we still need access to their national agreements for a limited time, such as IT and purchasing.

What is our new name?

Our name is changing only slightly…from CharterCARE Health Partners to CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island. This change reflects the fact that, as a new independent, non-profit, and locally managed organization, we are no longer part or a partner of the Prospect system.

Who owns us now?

Our owner is CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island, a new non-profit organization created to govern us and to oversee our local management team led by Jeff Liebman.

Who is running the system?

The CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island Board of Trustees oversees our local management team led by Jeff Liebman. Senior leadership and departmental managers remain the same. This means decision-making will be driven by what’s best for our patients, employees, and the community—rather than by corporate or investor interests.
