Nationally recognized thoracic surgeon will lead development of a clinically integrated thoracic diseases across CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island
CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island has named Ciaran J. McNamee, MD, Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Diseases, bringing nationally recognized expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the chest to patients throughout Rhode Island.
Dr. McNamee is an active staff member at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Most recently, he led the thoracic program at Care New England through its affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Leveraging more than 20 years of experience in academic medicine, surgery and research, Dr. McNamee will lead the integration of thoracic care across several clinical modalities, including oncology, pulmonary medicine, radiology and cardiology. He will also work to expand CharterCARE’s thoracic surgery program and establish a comprehensive thoracic oncology service.
His arrival also brings additional depth and expertise to the nationally recognized surgical oncology program at the Roger Williams Cancer Center, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers and other conditions affecting the lungs, esophagus and chest.
Advanced Thoracic and Cancer Care Close to Home
Dr. McNamee specializes in the treatment of both benign and malignant thoracic diseases. His clinical interests include lung cancer, esophageal disease, COPD, thymoma and thymic cancer, as well as minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
His expertise in robotic and minimally invasive procedures aligns with CharterCARE’s continued investment in advanced robotic surgery technology. These approaches can give surgeons greater precision while offering eligible patients less invasive treatment options and supporting improved recovery.

A Leader in Thoracic Surgery and Research
Board certified in both surgery and thoracic surgery, Dr. McNamee received his medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Canada. He completed surgical residencies at Alberta Hospital and cardiothoracic surgery residencies at Broadgreen Hospital and Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in clinical thoracic surgery at the University of Manitoba and earned a master’s degree in experimental surgery from the University of Alberta.
The appointment of Dr. McNamee represents another significant step in CharterCARE Health’s continued expansion of specialized cancer and surgical services.
